If you live up here, you already know the rhythm. Cars stack on Highland by six, the shell lights up, and by ten the canyons carry a faint chord back over your roof. What is different about summer 2026 is that the neighborhood's shared backyard is in transition all at once. The Bowl is closing out an era, opening a new building, and renaming its stage. Runyon is whole again for the first time in more than a year. And a couple of the dinner options at the base of the hill are brand new.
This is a season worth planning around, not just showing up to.
The Bowl's last Dudamel summer
The single most useful thing to know about the 2026 Hollywood Bowl calendar is that it is a farewell. The Hollywood Bowl's 2026 season is built around a week in August celebrating Gustavo Dudamel's 17th and last season as music and artistic director of the LA Phil, including a joint gig with Foo Fighters on Aug. 22. If you have been to the Bowl on a big-name pop night and on a Dudamel classical night, you know they are almost different venues. This week collapses that distinction on purpose.
The four-night arc is worth mapping:
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (Aug 20), with LA Phil, YOLA, and choral partners, plus a new piece by Michael Giacchino with lyrics by Amanda Gorman. Dudamel's Playlist (Aug 21), built around his favorite artists. Foo Fighters with the LA Phil and YOLA (Aug 22). A Musical Legacy (Aug 23), a genre-spanning look back at the last 17 years.
For residents, the practical read is that August traffic on Highland and Cahuenga will not be the usual summer average. Four consecutive nights of sold-through programming is a different pattern than the typical Tuesday-Thursday-Friday cadence, and Aug 22 in particular is the kind of headline that pulls out-of-town buyers.
The rest of the season is not thin either. St. Vincent will do a symphonic show with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Beach Boys join that orchestra for the traditional three-night July Fourth Fireworks Spectacular, and Jon Batiste closes Bowl-produced programming on Sept. 27. The Sound of Music Sing-A-Long returns Sept. 26, with a pre-show costume contest hosted by Melissa Peterman.
What's actually new on the campus
Two changes are worth noticing on your first visit of the year.
The first is architectural. Designed by the architecture collective RIOS with interiors by Frederick Fisher and Partners, the single-story, 7,500-square-foot Kohl Pavilion will be furnished with a full kitchen, serving as a gathering space for artists and operating as a new public restaurant on the Hollywood Bowl campus for LA Phil concerts. For anyone who has resigned themselves to a picnic basket or the box-level pre-order for twenty years, a proper sit-down option on the grounds is a meaningful change to the evening.
The second is symbolic. The 2026 season marks the first slate of artists to perform on the newly named John Williams Stage, a dedication that honors both his legacy and the Bowl's place in cultural history, where for decades film and orchestral music have met under the stars. The stage is the same one you have always sat in front of. The name is the story you tell out-of-town guests on the way in.
Runyon, whole again
Down the hill, the other piece of daily infrastructure has finally reset. If you have been walking the east side for the last year and vaguely resenting the caution tape, this is your summer.
Runyon Canyon's West Ridge Trail has reopened after being closed to the public for more than a year following the Sunset Fire, which scorched 60 acres of the Hollywood Hills in January of 2025. The reopening is not just symbolic. It restores the loop most locals actually prefer, and it thins out the crush on the paved central path that got worse every month the west side stayed fenced.
There is also a small, long-overdue amenity change coming. A bathroom at the Fuller Avenue park entrance is expected to open soon. For a park that, by one estimate, sees 2.5 million visitors a year, the absence of any restroom has been a running local joke for a decade. Two stalls is not a revolution. It is, however, the first permanent facility in the park's public history, and it changes the math on morning coffee before a hike.
One caveat worth carrying: the Mulholland lot is small. As of April 2026 it is open, but on Bowl nights and weekend mornings it fills before eight. The Fuller entrance is still where most residents actually park.
Two canyons east: The Ford
The Bowl gets the headlines. The Ford, tucked on the other side of the 101 at 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, is where a lot of Hills residents end up on a Sunday when they want the amphitheater feeling without the parking scrum. The 2026 slate is longer than usual and leans local.
A short list of what is on:
- Matteo Bocelli, Falling in Love World Tour, Sunday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m.
- A 45th anniversary screening of Luis Valdez's Zoot Suit on July 8, with appearances by Valdez and Edward James Olmos.
- Joe Hisaishi's Music Future series on July 25, from the composer of Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro.
- The 10th annual Boleros de Noche featuring Grammy-winning Puerto Rican artist iLe on Aug. 1, and folk veterans Judy Collins and Bruce Cockburn on Aug. 7.
Two Hisaishi notes are worth stacking. The Ford's July 25 program is the composer live in a 1,200-seat house. If you miss it, the Bowl is doing a separate three-night tribute to his Studio Ghibli catalogue later in the summer, part of what Variety describes as a three-night Wes Anderson music slate in July followed by a three-night Studio Ghibli run.
Where to eat when you come down the hill
Two openings within a short drive of the canyons are worth adding to the rotation.
At the base of the hill, on the Sunset Strip side, Mott 32, the Cantonese fine-dining group from Hong Kong with nine locations worldwide including Vegas, Dubai and Vancouver, is opening in the Citizen News building with dishes like Iberico pork dumplings and ginger-scallion fried lobster. The Citizen News building itself is a 1930 landmark, so this is one of those openings that changes the block, not just the menu.
A little further west, on La Peer, is the return of a global name that will draw Bowl-adjacent traffic. SUSHISAMBA came back to the US in March 2026 with a spectacular 11,000-square-foot rooftop, and a retractable roof that transitions from sun-drenched afternoons to evening views of the Hollywood Hills. The address, for anyone plotting a pre-show reservation, is 639 N La Peer Dr, West Hollywood, with a Wednesday lunch service from 11:30 a.m. The 5 p.m. dinner opening lines up cleanly with an 8 p.m. Bowl curtain if you leave by seven.
Between those two, and Ivy at the Shore or Yamashiro for the standing recommendations, the summer dinner map is fuller than it was a year ago.

It is that three of the pieces that define daily life up here are all changing in the same season. The Bowl is closing a 17-year chapter and opening its first new public building in a generation.
